The Pharmacy Technician Program prepares students for both entry-level and advanced roles across various pharmacy settings. Pharmacy technicians are certified healthcare professionals who perform essential tasks related to pharmacy under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Often serving as the first point of contact for patients, technicians play a key role in customer service, workflow efficiency, and medication safety. Their responsibilities include assisting with prescription preparation, handling patient and insurance information, managing inventory, operating pharmacy technology, preparing both non-sterile and sterile products, supporting vaccination efforts, and communicating with healthcare providers. As vital members of the healthcare team, pharmacy technicians play a significant role in ensuring the accuracy and overall success of pharmacy operations.
The Pharmacy Technician Program offers two pathways: a Level I Certificate (9–12 months) and an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Pharmacy Technology (18–24 months). The program is designed with flexibility in mind, offering the majority of courses online, with select hybrid courses that require limited in-person attendance. Any in-person classes are held in the evenings to accommodate working students. The program also includes clinical requirements to provide hands-on experience in real-world pharmacy settings. In addition to earning a certificate or degree, students will also receive ACPE Sterile Compounding and Immunization Administration certificates, giving them a competitive advantage in today’s job market.
Pharmacy technicians must be registered with the and take a national certification exam. The Texas State Board of Pharmacy will perform a background check and require fingerprints. For more information on types of convictions that may prevent registration with the Board of Pharmacy, please refer to the documents on , and .
